DIY Audrey Hepburn Inspired Birdcage Veil
Yup, we’re bringing you more DIY tutorials…you love them, admit it! Natalie of Filosophi Event Planning will be joining us once in a while to share some of her fabulous DIY creations, ones that you may be inspired to do on your own. You’re gonna love her first one!
So you’re a bride to be looking through etsy to find yourself a birdcage veil and you find the perfect one….to find out that it’s $200 and you can’t afford it with all the other expenses of a wedding! That’s why I’m here to tell you that there is a easy solution to this problem….why not make it yourself??! It’s easy to make and if you’re only wearing it down the aisle once ( hopefully) than it’s a big money saver to craft it yourself!
What you need:
* Birdcage material
* About 7″ by 7″ Silk or upholstery material in white or cream
* scissors
* needle and white thread
* bobby pins or claw clips

Step 1: Cut the 7″ x 7″ fabric piece in half. Take one piece and fold it in half. Save the second piece and place to the side. Now sew a quarter inch seam down both edges to connect it! Once you have done that fold it out to see the good side.
Step 2: You now have a long tube of fabric ;) Find the middle of this tube and scrunch it down with your fingers, pin it and now sew the scrunch into place.
Step 3: To finish off the ends of the bow I folded it under at both ends and sewed a small seam to finish it. This isn’t the best way to do it but you will never see the bottom so it doesn’t really matter, so go wild!
Step 4: cut a small piece of the spare white fabric you have and make a tie for you bow….you can do it any size you like but I made mine about an 1 1/2 ” wide. fold it around the bow to measure how much material you need to cut off the tie. Once you have the correct measurement add 1/2 to it because you will do the same thing as STEP 1 for this and fold it in half and sew to connect the edges…fold it out to show the good side. Now pull the bow through the hole of the tie and now you have a BOW!!
Step 5: Grab your birdcage material and cut a piece that is 22 inches wide and then cut a half a circle that is 12 inches long…I just eyeballed this because I wanted to be able to adjust it. So if you want to adjust it then cut a bigger half circle so you can trim it the way you want it! When you are cutting the birdcage veil you will notice the edges are sometimes frayed and look unfinished…if you cut along the crosses of the holes in the veil material then you will end up with a nice finished edge ;)
Step 6: Take your needle and thread and make a knot at the end of the thread. Make a knot with your thread at the begging end of the veil and now weave through the material on the straight edge starting at one end and ending at the other. Make sure you weave it evenly so it will gather well!
Step 7: Now stitch the gathered veil part to the backside of the bow! When you stitch you want to try and hide the gathered material as much as possible with the bow. Cut excess material off.
Step 8: You can now add a clip of any kind on the back of the veil :) I chose bobby pins because they hold really well!!! A claw clip will also be a great option too!
YOU’RE DONE!! YAY! CONGRATS! Now you have a beautiful Audrey Hepburn inspired birdcage veil to wear on your wedding day!
