Lake Erie Tributary Fishing

The months of November and December offer anglers in NWPA some of the most exciting steelhead fishing of the year. Steelhead are spread out along many of the Lake Erie tributaries at this time. Low water conditions and lack of flow have caught some of the fish in deeper holes upstream, while many other fish have fallen back to the lake. Steelhead staging at the mouths can be caught by casting spoons as well as other lures. Steelhead are a lot of fun to catch in the open water of Lake Erie and often make powerful runs with acrobatic leaps.

Fly fishing is another great way to target steelhead. Anglers who fly fish often catch fish in deep runs of tributaries by mimicking eggs and insects drifting in the currents. Gus Ward, of Edinboro, shows a nice fish caught in November. Gus likes to employ several tactics when targeting steelhead. He uses both spinning and fly tackle depending on conditions.

Brown trout have been added to the Lake Erie fishery and add diversity to the steelhead runs. Lake run brown trout are beautiful fish that can rival Lake Erie steelhead in size. The same methods used for steelhead often work for brown trout. Overcast days, early mornings, and late evenings are good times to target these fish when the water is low and clear.
