A New Concept on Boutonnieres

When Melissa from Wedding Obsession asked me if I’d be interested in writing about flowers as a Guest Blogger, i jumped on the opportunity. Over the years I’ve been inspired by so many great designers, both locally and internationally, but I never thought that I would be looked at as inspirational. Thank you Melissa for both the opportunity and the compliment!
So, what better way to start off my first ‘Blog Appearance’ than by ‘inspiring’ Wedding Obsession readers with a new type of boutonniere that I hope will soon become a trend in wedding design. Let’s call it the “Pocket Bout“.
One day while creating wedding florals for a photo shoot for our site, I realized I was out of boutonniere magnets, so I decided I would create a new type of bout. I can’t take credit for this style of boutonniere, but was inspired by a similar type seen in an industry magazine years ago. This concept is as ‘simple’ as using a magnet to attach a boutonniere to the lapel of the groom and attendants, but is ‘user friendly’ for everyone (including those who cannot use a magnet because of pacemakers, etc). Why not forgo the handkerchief traditionally used in suit attire, and in it’s place put a “Pocket Bout”?
A floral design is created atop a piece of cardboard, with the bottom portion being left bare to allow it to be easily slid into the pocket of any suit or tux. Because there is more surface area to work with, a florist can create a design that is stunningly simple, to one that will have your guests dropping their jaws. Any medium can be used to create the ‘canvas’ for the flowers and accessories, from an enveloping aspidistra leaf, to a piece of twisted ribbon wrapped multiple times around the cardboard.
What I really like about them is the idea that colour can still be incorporated into the pocket area as if the handkerchief were still present. One thing I can say for sure is that a groom, his attendants, and those family members who have been honoured at the wedding are going to be paying attention to what is going on at the ceremony, pictures, and reception. They will most likely not notice and not want to be bothered with having to ‘fix’ a downward facing or upside down boutonniere – trying to figure out how to get it right. So for simplicity sake, why not try a “Pocket Bout”? It can’t get any simpler than this!
