I don’t know about you, but I am LOVING daylight savings.  The weather is getting warmer, restaurants are opening outdoor seating, and it’s light out even after work- what could be better? However, as our days are getting longer, our etiquette series is coming to an end.  I am sad to announce that this is the last of our etiquette series, but so excited for the surprise that awaits you next week. Have a happy St. Patrick’s Day !

Should I offer to help pay for a bachelorette party, even if I cannot attend?

These days, the costs of a  bachelorette party do not fall solely on the host. Whether it is a night on the town or weekend getaway celebration, the host will typically ask all of the ladies to pay for their part.

If you are close with the bride, and especially if you are a bridesmaid, we encourage you to really try to attend this fun occasion. If not are absolutely unable to attend, you can express your regrets and let the bride know you are thinking about her by contributing in a special way.  Send a bottle of wine or champagne to the party location with a personal note or treat the bride to a manicure beforehand – she will definitely appreciate it!

If I want to create a casual atmosphere, can I do open seating at my wedding?

Of course you can! However, it is important to keep in mind that although this might appear to create a casual atmosphere, it can often become awkward and uncomfortable for a seated dinner. For some of your guests that might not know many people, it puts them in a situation where they might feel alone. Or, for a group of fifteen guests who are all eager to catch up, this might cause problems for them to want to fit at a table of ten.

So, you might want to reconsider and do hard seating if you are having a seated dinner.  You can always get people up and casually socializing after the dinner.  A situation where open seating can work well is with fun food stations or buffets, and with a venue where you want your guests to enjoy and explore (but not stray too far from the fun!).  Create a variety of seating with larger tables, café tables with barstools, and lounge seating. This offers a variety of options to your guests- but always remember to be a good host keep an eye on those who might feel uncomfortable in this type of environment.

Please continue to feel free to post questions or email me at emily@wordpress.com with any more etiquette questions you might face- we are always happy to answer them. Check in with us next week for a very exciting new series!
