Beautiful DIY Wedding at the Steam Whistle Brewery in Toronto
Must say, November has been a month just full of inspiration. My inbox just keeps flowing and today’s feature is one that I impatiently waited to share with you. Captured by Debra Eby Photography , Alexis and Michael bring the season of fall back with an organic feel, from the wooden boxed florals in fall colors, potted mums lining the ceremony aisle and gold sprayed fall ornaments scattered throughout. From Debra (the photographer): I loved that the bride had a “reveal” for all her close girlfriends. They gathered on the front lawn of her parent’s home anticipating her loveliness. Seeing their reactions was such a special moment of the day. Tears, happiness, oohhhs and ahhhs, started the day in celebratory fashion.
What was your favorite moment from your wedding day?
Doing an intimate pre-ceremony reveal with my husband in highpark. This is the park my family and I went to every Sunday and it was so special to have our photo’s and this moment at this location. I also did a reveal with all 12 of my best girlfriends. The reaction on their faces was priceless and made me feel so special.
The actual ceremony and reception was held in a brewery in the heart of the city. This was no ordinary brewery, it was a beautiful old converted brick and beam train station in the heart of downtown Toronto that produced a local product – perfect fit for Mike and I. Because this was a fairly raw space, I was tasked with dreaming up a theme that would make it come to life. I didn’t wait to stick to a strict theme so I decided on vintage glamour since that would let me get away with pairing random finds together, inserting a little sparkle and not have to be matchy-matchy. Luckily my mom and I love hunting for a good deal whether it be at a garage sale, salvage yard or converting an unsuspecting object into something unique. We would go out several weekends collecting old vintage crystal vases from every goodwill store in the city and filling them with pillar candles not one the same. I wanted the venue to be exploding with candles and I think that really added to the glamorous, warm feel of the space. I ended up finding these great old oak kitchen cabinet doors at a salvage place, painting the inside with chalkboard paint and chaining them together for our seating chart. I get my craftiness from my grandmother who created my card box from scratch out of a plain old cardboard box, paint and some old belts. Almost every decor item was DIY including the flower arrangements to the spray painted gourds.

Advice for future brides/grooms-to-be?
My advice to other bride and grooms are two-fold: 1) try to enjoy all the planning and creative flare you can put into this day because it’s over before you know it so might as well enjoy the journey too and 2) no one but you really remembers the details so focus on what’s important to you and only you. There are no “rules”so try not to get wrapped up in all the wedding traditions that aren’t meaningful to you
