Sunday Shot – Common Kingfisher
Common Kingfisher

Perched atop an under construction site iron rod, this common Kingfisher was trying to spot the fish in a stagnant water body created by rainwater. Kingfisher can spot its food i.e. fish in still water and can dive into water to shallow depth only.

Saw this one capture a tiny fish and fly back to relish the catch.

Common Kingfisher can be commonly seen around most of India and is easily identifiable due to its distinct blue color and size. They can be spotted near water bodies perched atop nearest plants, tree branches and intensely watching the water to spot the fish. They keep looking around until they spot the prey and then suddenly take-off directly headed for the prey. Diving to shallow depths only they catch the prey and fly back to the safety of branches to relish. They fly across the waterbodies close to the water level. Their eye sight does not allow them a good vision in fast flowing water and hence they like the lakes, backwaters or the river edges where the current is low. Mostly seen alone. Colorful with typical patterns it is one of the beautiful birds . Smaller in size compared to other variety of Kingfisher birds.
