Walk in and around Indira Park Hyderabad
Colorful Trees at Indira Park

Indira Park Hyderabad is conveniently located on one side of Hussain Sagar Lake on Lower Tank Bund Road. When I planned to walk around this area, I wanted to walk from here till Birla Temple on top of a nearby hill, but the park was so peaceful that I ended up walking there for close to 2 hours and abandoned the rest of the plans. The park was a pleasant surprise with its well marked tree-lined walk ways, the rich orange Gulmohar trees, various colorful flowers peeping out from here and there and a small lake in the middle.

The rocks, which are the natural landscape of the area, have been maintained as such in this 76-acre rectangular park. Rocks resembling various animals have been placed on platforms and labeled, though sometimes you have to stretch your imagination to match the label and the rock shape. It is after these rocks that the park is technically called living rock sanctuary and the sculptures have been done by an artist from Shanti Niketan. Cobbled floors have been laid around some old trees in such a way that you can sit in the shade and enjoy a small performance or a good conversation. At this point in time when Gulmohar trees are laden with flowers, there is a carpet of orange flowers around the trees that I found very inviting. But for the noise from the busy roads surrounding the park, you could be completely disconnected from the city life inside the park. You can go around the lake and observe some huge trees with a small bench, which can invoke the writer or thinker or at least a photographer in you. The palm trees surrounding the lake create a hill station like scenery with their reflection in the lake water.

In one corner of the park is children’s area with basic rides and swings for them. Then there is a fairly large skating area which I am not sure if is the part of the park or not, but you can access it from the park. Another corner resembles a jungle of Palm tress though a very small one. On one side of the lake there is an island like formation in the shape of a Mango, the way it is done in block printed fabrics. You can see some butterflies though you would need a lot of patience to photograph them. There are manicured lawns on which ideally you should not walk, but to walk barefoot on them would be a pleasure.

There is a mention of boating and musical fountains, I did not see either of them happening in the park or the provision for the same. A perfect place for a peaceful and easy walk, located right in the heart of the town and easily accessible by public transport. Now I want to explore the other parks of this city of Hyderabad that I am just beginning to know.

Rama Krishna Mutt, opposite Indira Park Hyderabad

Bang opposite the gate of Indira park is Ramakrishna Mutt, a campus that has a world temple that celebrates all religions of the world, a book shop that stocks the publications in many languages, a languages school where you can learn Sanskrit and many other languages including the foreign ones, a Vivekananda institute of Human excellence, a library that offers books at very reasonable rates and a health center. All buildings are in the typical pale pink color characteristic of the organization. World temple has a huge hall on its first floor with idols of the pioneers of this movement. You can attend the daily pooja there and if you sit there for a while you would see the constant flow of children and young students. A walk around this campus is also peaceful and enriching.
