How to Prepare for Fall Weather Emergencies

Fall is a great time to consider how you should get ready for cold weather emergencies. Blizzards, deep cold snaps, ice storms, late season hurricanes—and combinations of all four, like the Frankenstorm that is predicted to hit the northeast next week—can leave you sitting in the cold, literally, if you are not ready ahead of time.

When you’re not busy hunting, a few nice days of “Indian summer” give you a great chance to stock up on a few cool weather preparations to keep you and your family safe and warm, no matter what kind of weather the next few months might throw at you. Now’s the time to think about stocking up with the following:

1. Mr. Heater Portable Buddy is a small propane heater that has a low-oxygen safety shut-off switch and other safety features built into it so you can safely run this combustion powered heater indoors without the hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning. The heaters retail for about $100, and you’ll want to have a few propane cylinders on had to go with it. No electricity is required, other than a few “D” cell batteries to run the fan, so this heater will still work in a power outage or at hunting camp.

2. A battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio with emergency tone alert will give you up-to-the-minute news about weather events that are on the way. Be sure to buy some extra batteries.

3. Buy some boredom defense items like books, games, and puzzles. These can be a sanity saver when you are snowed in or the roads are iced up. Stock up some activity books, games, crayons and coloring books for the kids in your life, too. You’ll be much happier when the little people are happy.

4. And finally, stock up on a few morale boosters, such as your most needed snacks, a nice bottle of your favorite hooch, or maybe even inspirational books. These sorts of things serve as rewards for yourself and others after the hard work of surviving in a cold weather emergency.

What are you doing this fall to get ready for colder, wetter, snowier weather? Are you splitting wood, cleaning chimneys or filling the freezer with venison? Let us know in the comments.
