Bring Me Sunshine

A healthy dose of Sunshine could benefit you more than you think.

A new article has come out from the NHS advising the different levels of activity that adults need to undertake to stay fit and healthy. Many people have presumed that simple, daily activities like housework or non strenuous activity will suffice, when in fact; new guidelines tell us this is not the case. A minimum of 150 minutes a week of intense exercise that leaves you sweating with an increased heart rate is key. In England just 40% of men and 28% of women are meeting the new guidelines.

According to the NHS, the new advice for adults is that “adults aged 19-64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate intensity aerobic activity every week and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week.” At GO Outdoors we’re well aware of the benefits of exercising, but what’s also key to us is getting away from the gym and getting outside! As well as being beneficial for your mood, weight and health- we found something interesting, that sunlight exposure (in moderate amounts) can increase your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a really interesting vitamin. Research suggests that Vitamin D can prevent osteoporosis, depression, some cancers. It helps you absorb calcium.

The best part is – It’s free! That’s because it is produced naturally when you’re exposed to sunlight. Sunlight is the only effective way for your body to produce this vitamin, much more so than ingesting it in food. It is hindered by sunscreen, so the key is to find a balance between burning and getting your vitamin D. Recently charities include the British Association of Dermatologists and Cancer Research UK have agreed that “Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation is the best way to boost vitamin D.” (Source: NHS Choices)

This advice should be good news for outdoor uk lovers, but if you want to get into walking , running , cycling , or climbing for the health benefits- and if you like the sun- then this advice is a great boost to get outside! GO outdoors- there’s never been a better time!
