Backyard birding ‘perfect storm’

Take more than a quick glance around and you’ll surely notice that birds of all sorts are making their way back into northwestern Pennsylvania. Some never left at all.

I saw at least a dozen robins one late January day at State Game Lands 314, and last weekend watched a common redpoll bounce from the road to trees and brush at Horseshoe Pond. The waterfowl activity on Presque Isle Bay, at the channel and at Beach 11 has been increasing these past two week. And it’s been easy to tell when a storm is due this winter just by watching the activity at the backyard feeders; it picks up tremendously in the hours before snow starts to fall.

David Schillinger of Erie recently had an exciting backyard birding moment.

“On Monday (Feb. 21, at 9 a.m.) I experienced the birdwatcher/birdfeeder perfect storm. I witnessed 11 different bird species at my birdfeeder and suet feeder located in my backyard. The species: Robin, house sparrow, house finch, purple finch, cardinal, blue jay, grackle, starling, cedar waxwing, junco, and a Downy Woodpecker on my suet feeder. This was something to see. These birds were all seen at once in the tree above the feeder, on the ground and in the feeder. … I have been watching birds for years but have never experienced such a exciting moment.”
