This week’s western Pennsylvania waterfowl migration report from David Rearick, a member of the Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff :

Location: Butler

Weather: Unseasonably warm and sunny, high in the 30’s with lows in the 20’s.

Snow cover: Snow cover has all melted away after last week’s warm-up.

Water conditions: Most bodies of water are frozen, but moving bodies of water are still wide open.

Feeding conditions: Good, the sun warms up and unfreezes the ground giving birds ample opportunity to feed in cornfields.

Species and numbers: The opening of some water has spread the birds out, but there are still a few ducks floating around on the moving water and geese, but numbers are far from strong.

Migrations: The only migration that has taken place in the last few weeks is the exodus of many birds from the state headed south to warmer weather,

Season stage: Late season.

Hunting report: Hunting has been slow as birds numbers are low and the birds that are still around are spread out significantly.

Gossip: The weather for 2010 was strange just like that of 2009. When the ducks finally showed up in late November they were immediately on the move again due to a major snowstorm and cold front. At the end of 2010 there was a good warm-up keeping moving water open and opening up some other small pockets of water allowing birds room, but is also gave them a good opportunity to spread out. If you find them, hunt them, regardless of the numbers, as it may be the only birds in the area and the season is running out.
