What is your background and how did you get into doing calligraphy?

When I was 13 I got a calligraphy book as a Christmas gift and it got me interested in lettering. After I had graduated from college, I was looking for a hobby that had a creative slant to it and I had a lot of friends getting married at the time, and thought calligraphy was a great option.

I took private lessons for a few years, then taught myself some other styles and fonts from books. I started taking classes again about two years ago and have done some weekend workshops through the local Calligrapher’s Guild and then some week long classes through IAMPETH, the International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting.

How would you describe your style of calligraphy; what makes it unique?

My style is actually fairly traditional. I’ve been branching out recently to put some modern touches into my traditional styles and to do traditional fonts on non-traditional surfaces, such as chalkboards and mirrors. I custom mix ink color, everything from plum to sage green to coral. I also like working in metallic inks.

What items can you calligraph?

Most of my work is related to weddings and everything having to do with weddings. That includes invitations, envelopes, place cards, escort cards, signage for a wide range of things, you name it. There’s nothing that I’m not willing to at least try!

What is your favorite piece you have calligraphed?

Strangely enough, it was little tent cards that were labels for some late night snacks. The groom loved baseball and the late night snacks were baseball themed, so I took some red thread and did some “baseball stitching” in the corners of the cards to make them look like baseballs and did a modern, all lowercase font.
