Vintage Inspired Bird & Deer Wedding in Vancouver
I absolutely love when brides and grooms infuse their own personalities in their weddings. Meet Tristan and Camilla. They met when Tristan was a student in Camilla’s How to Draw Manga class for the North Vancouver Arts Council. Camilla is a famed Manga illustrator and it’s so nice to see some of her work shown in the wedding, including the printed fabric that was used to cover the gorgeous chaise used in her reception. Held at the Brix Restaurant in Vancouver, this wedding is filled with lovely vintage details surrounding a bird & deer theme, along with jaw-dropping floral chandelier from Sunflower Florist . Equally charming is the dessert table just full of goodies that are a reflection of the couple’s interests. Photography is by Two Doves Photography .
How did you two meet?
We met 9 years ago, I was teaching a class on How To Draw Manga for the North Vancouver Arts Council and his mother was working with me to set up the course. Tristan joined my course in the fall and we met outside the class and I fell instantly for him, it was love of first sight! But he had a girlfriend at the time, so we became really close friends and after a few years he moved away and we lost touch. More than three years later we reconnected through Facebook and met up right before i was going to leave for a trip. When we saw each other again that night we both confessed our feelings for the very first time. We’d been in love with each other all the time we were friends and apart. It was very shocking, neither of us had ever said our feelings out loud so we didn’t realize that we felt the same way. Then one month later he moved in with me and well, now we’re husband and wife. I hope we live happily ever after!
Any favourite wedding moments?
Our wedding was amazing! There were so many great moments. My childhood friend, Morgan Strickland, is a soprano, so after our ceremony she sang “Con Te Partiro”. Her voice stunned our guests and moved us all, I even caught some of the guys crying. This was such a special moment for me especially. I will never forget that for as long as I live.
We had a photobooth that our friend helped set up and that was a huge hit. She is a photographer so the photos are super professional and her hand held camera clicker made it easy for our guests to take as many photos of themselves as they wanted. We had to sort through a few hundred and they are priceless. I think our favourite part were the speeches. Tristan and I had prepared thank you speeches and asked a few people to speak as well. It turned into a comedy club! Everyone’s speeches and our thank you’s were so funny that more people joined in and it turned into a really hilarious time that ran for more than an hour. I was crying from laughter and I think so was everyone else. To have our friends just get up and share their stories about us was unexpected and truly memorable.
What was the inspiration behind your wedding decor and colours?
Our wedding had a bird and deer, teal, white and gold vintage theme. I absolutely adore all things victorian and lacey, but I also love a modern twist on them. So our bird and deer additions were all white and we had framed pictures of deer in suits and little details like white love bird salt and pepper shaker sets for place cards. Tristan was worried I’d go overboard since I’m a detail nut, but he was so happy when he saw it all come together. Every aspect of the event had a touch of vintage or bird/deer. One of my favourite parts of the wedding were the flowers, May and Yalda from Sunflower Florist out did themselves! I would constantly pop in with pictures and ideas about what i wanted, and after some time we realized that I kept circling back to the vintage look. So I would say the inspiration for the vintage theme really came from talking to them. The centerpieces were in white milk jugs and tea tins, and the bouquets were jaw dropping gorgeous.
Our desert bar was a work of art. We had cake pops from Luscious Creations, ferrero rochers, macaroons from Kitchening & Co, homemade pies, and in the center was our wedding cake made by The Cake and the Giraffe, three tiered with layers of chocolate salted caramel and vanilla mojito and decorated like Mario Bros levels! I’m Italian and Tristan loves video games and with our vintage theme the cake fit in perfectly and really stunned our guests with how fun it was. All the deserts were gluten free and so good that there was nothing left over!
Any advice for future brides/grooms-to-be?
Weddings are a lot of work so pace yourselves. I spent a year and a half organizing the decor and the details of the wedding. By the time the wedding came we had everything under control and we weren’t stressed. Brides, make sure to include the groom in the planning too. Tristan had great ideas and we didn’t fight over anything because we both knew that it was a party to celebrate us a couple. And if there is anything either of you are uncomfortable with, communicate, don’t fight.
I would also say to hire a DJ, don’t rely on a playlist or the wedding coordinator for this. Its a big job. So don’t saddle your friend of coordinator with it. DJ’s have expert timing and will be able to keep the music flowing and your song won’t get cut off as you walk down the aisle.
Make it fun! This is a celebration of your love. If you’re like Tristan and myself, and you want to be goofy, be goofy, write funny vows and hilarious speeches, make it a relaxed and personal event. Our french bulldog Loki was in the wedding party, vintage bowtie and all!
Before the big day, Tristan and I invited friends and family to a beach picnic where we relaxed for a few hours and caught up with out of town guests. It was so much fun, and then afterwards we spent the evening with just the two of us. The wedding is a really big day, so Tristan and I decided to have a nice quiet romantic evening together at our favourite restaurant.
And most importantly find a venue like The Brix Restaurant. It was the best choice we made in the entire wedding. The staff were incredible, we were taken care of so well, nothing was a problem, there were no mishaps or disasters. Our friends are still raving about the food. So make sure that you feed your guests with delicious and memorable food, wow their tastebuds as well as their eyes!
