Modern Tartan Wedding

I still can’t believe that Christmas is around the corner. Although the date for some much-needed holiday time away from blogging is coming soon, I still have loads of real weddings to share with you. This next one sent over by ENV Photography shows how you can incorporate cultural traditions into your special day but still keep it modern and personal. For Deanne and Steve, it was important to infuse some Scottish details because of Steve’s heritage. I absolutely love the complement of the tartan sash to Deanne’s bridal gown. Gorgeous.

VENUES: My husband’s family is Scottish so there was no doubt in our mind that we would like to include some of the traditions in our day. He dreamed of walking down the isle in a kilt. Other than going to Scotland I don’t think we could of found a better backdrop than the Hotel MacDonald, a castle nestled in downtown Edmonton with a gorgeous view of the river valley. That was the easy part. We did want to embrace some of the scottish traditions and we chose a very formal setting for the reception, however we wanted something a little different. We chose the relaxed atmosphere of the citadel theatre atmosphere for the ceremony. We loved it right away, the stage, the theatre seating (wooden benches), the water fall, the view of the city through the glass walls, and of course the entrance from the elevator behind.

THE MARCH: When researching traditions, I read a cute story about how the bride would be marched to the ceremony to the chapel, then everyone would walk them home at the end of the evening to begin their journey. That’s how the parade behind the piper came to be… both locations were close together, and after sharing the story with my mom via phone, and telling her that we decided to walk instead of renting cars. She thought it was a wonderful idea… all it needed was a piper. Another one of my favorite moments, again a Scottish tradition was to have my husband give me his tartan (the sash) after the ceremony and I was given a horseshoe from his nephew (a toddler) for good luck.

DECOR INSPIRATION: We wanted to break away from the formal feel of the grand Empire Ball Room, yet somehow keep it elegant. We decided that Red would shake things up enough, with that stark black and white of the damask table linens. We made all the center pieces, place cards, and seating chart. I remember making tissue paper flowers as a child for weddings (usually to decorate the cars). I went to Martha Stewart Weddings to get inspiration as it has been some time since I made a paper flower. We loved the pomanders made from flowers attached to a styrofoam ball. The vase was already in our home (from Ikea), the rest was just some fooling around while watching movies until we came up with something we liked. The easy way to get your fiance to help with place cards is to add a machine, so we purchased a Cricut paper cutter, and the rest is history.

As for the bridesmaids, they both wanted simple black, something elegant, the guys had the traditional kilts and prince charlie jackets, and I was inspired by old hollywood glam for the birdcage veil and my mom for the pearls… she wore them at her wedding. I love looking at her wedding pictures… timeless!!
