Aqua & Red Wedding in Kingston, Ontario
I am totally happy for this next bride + groom and thrilled that they wanted to share her wedding with us today. I love when I get to share weddings of brides who follow Wedding Obsession! Michelle and Mike were married at the Vimy Officers’ Mess, CFB in Kingston, Ontario in a totally red & aqua wedding that wasn’t a miss for details. I love the colour combination, it’s always fresh, modern and totally charming. After dating a few months after meeting online (it does work!), Mike asked her to marry him, presenting her with a ring that his father, a jeweler, made custom for them. Overall the wedding was a labour of love from all their family + friends, in fact the groom’s cousin, Kelsey of KGOODPHOTO was the photographer. Enjoy!
What was the inspiration behind your decor and colour choices?
I had to have bright poppy red as one of my colours in order to match Mike’s uniform. I thought about what I wanted with the red for a long time – I love bright colours, but didn’t want to torture my bridesmaids with anything tacky. I posted about it online, and my long-distance friend Whitney suggested teal. I loved the idea, and when I went to look at fabric swatches, the lightest shade of teal caught my eye against the red, so it became a red and aqua wedding. Very happy with it, it’s very me!
The cakes + cupcakes are super cute and match the wedding colours perfectly. The 2 red M&M’s represent Mike and Michelle.
What was your favorite moment on your wedding day?
Having that piece of paper signed felt pretty good, that’s for sure! Chris’s song was wonderful – he inserted extra verses customized to Mike and me. Mike also tried to sneak a kiss while we were signing the registry but got caught and scolded by my moh. There were a lot of nice quiet giggly moments with my cousins throughout the day – I adore those girls and am so happy they were with me. Jason’s best man speech was amazing, too, very funny (“I haven’t known Mike as long as a lot of people in this room… except for Michelle.”) and sweet. And I loved the look on my guests’ faces when they realized our first dance was to Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” – it was a very rockin’ crowd, so they appreciated that!
What advice do you have for other brides currently planning their own weddings?
1) Invite EVERYONE you love – I was sad to see a lot of negative RSVPs, especially at the last minute when inviting someone on my B-list might have been awkward :(. 2) Having said that, expect last minute changes! And don’t worry about them too much, your vendors will be flexible. And 3) Write down your speech! It was a long day, I hadn’t had much to eat all week, and right before we went up, I had to take a traditional Mess shot of sambuka, and all the lovely words I’d been rehearsing turned into blubbering nonsense!
