This week’s Erie-area fishing report from Randy Leighton, deputy waterways conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission:

The unusually mild winter continues for the area as it has in many areas. Little to no ice has left anglers with a wealth of other opportunities, from steelheading the tribs to shore fishing the lake, bay and inland waters. Steelhad fishing has remained good with fish having a long winter to scatter throught all areas of the tribs. Although many steelhead are darkened and weather worn, they are not in nearly as bad of shape as they can be after a significant battering of an ice meltdown. The open water has from time to time brought additional fresh fish in and with conditions they are easily able to move well upstream to the far reaches of the tribs.

Anglers targeting panfish and burbot have seen success along the bayfront and along the North and South piers. Time is running out for the possibility if any good ice fishing season.
