Aajkal – Once Upon a Time in Delhi
Roughly translated to English
These day, you will find me
Roaming in the lanes of Delhi
Peeping in some old havelis and kuchas
sitting on an old abandoned terrace
Going from one monument to another
looking at the necropolis all around
watching the yesterday and tomorrow walking together
and some new histories being written
Sitting in a corner I saw
Carefree play of the children in the street
The bazaars waking up in the morning
Sun going up and down on the bastions of forts
Saw the bazaars, perfumed with flowers
Tenpting jalebi being fried in the street
phirni displayed with its thousand strands
and then saw them sipping tea
Saw a Pujari smile at my camera
Saw a doctor taking care of birds
a Qawwal’s eye spotting the next donor
and common man going from birth to death
Saw some people struggling to run
and some exhausted with too much running
sometimes clashing with each other
and sometimes holding each other
Stumbling tumbling the world around me kept moving
burdened yet smiling faces all around
tired they sit down, only to get up again
Talking to themselves, in the middle of the chaos
I saw myself getting drenched in history
looking for heritage in ruins
trying to link my yesterday with today
trying to understand this city called Delhi.
Aajkal was written 6 years back in December of 2009 when I used to walk in the lanes of Delhi and that resulted in a series of Walking Tours of Delhi .
