The last native Pennsylvania elk is believed to have met it’s demise at the hands of hunters in 1877. The Pennsylvania Game Commission began the reintroduction of elk in Pennsylvania by bringing in Rocky Mountain elk during a thirteen year period from 1913-1926.  These animals were brought in from areas in the west including Yellowstone National Park. Today, elk in Pennsylvania number around 800-900 animals and are the largest population of elk in the eastern U.S.

The current Pennsylvania elk population resides in Elk, Cameron, McKean, Potter, Clinton, Centre, and Clearfield counties.  Most of the herd can be found in Elk County particularly near Benezette. Elk are popular attractions in the PA Wilds region. Thousands of visitors make their way to Pennsylvania’s elk country to experience for themselves the majesty of the bugling season. Elk are the largest members of the deer family in Pennsylvania with bull elk weighing nearly 1000 pounds. Now you can get a glimpse of these awesome animals and listen to the sounds of a bugling bull elk from home.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has installed a camera on State Game Lands 311 in Elk County, in a field that is off limits to people, but that typically is a hub of elk activity as the bugling season heats up. The camera was installed with help from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry. Video and sound from the camera are being live streamed on the Game Commission’s website, www.pgc.state.pa.us , and some good-sized bull elk, not to mention turkeys, deer and other wildlife, already have made appearances.

Elk State Forest derives its name from the great numbers of elk that once thrived in the area. Located mainly in Elk and Cameron counties, it comprises almost 200,000 acres of northern hardwood forest. Today, visitors can once again see elk in the meadows and openings scattered throughout the state forest. This is one of eight state forests located in the PA Wilds region and features the Elk Country Visitor Center and a portion of the Elk Scenic Drive .

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced earlier this year it had decided to add 17,000 acres of land and waterways bordering Elk State Forest. This is the largest land addition to the state forest system in 65 years. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy assisted with the purchase.

“This property will be open to the public for hunting, fishing, hiking and other recreational activities, expanding the tremendous recreational opportunities that attract visitors to the Pennsylvania Wilds every year who support the local economy through tourism,” Acting DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said. “It will forever protect a number of high quality tributaries to the East Branch Clarion River and habitat for several species of concern, such as the timber rattlesnake.”
