Matthew Lamoreaux’s NWPA Mentored Youth Gobbler
Matthew Lamoreaux, age 15 of Edinboro, was hunting with Anthony Campanella on April 23 when he harvested this beautiful NWPA Spring gobbler. The big bird had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs. The two were hunting in Erie County during Pennsylvania’s Youth Spring Turkey Hunt last Saturday.
Anthony said about the morning hunt, “We had made two sets of calls and heard only one lone gobble from a roost.” With no luck at the location, the two tried a different spot and immediately had a bird gobble from about 200 yards off. “The gobbler answered three times then closed the distance silently. About 20 minutes had past since he last answered. Then he suddenly appeared!” There were two other gobblers with him but Matthew took the strutter. He made a great 40 yard shot to seal the deal.
Anthony enjoys watching someone take their first bird more than pulling the trigger himself. “It was Matthew’s first time hunting turkey and his reaction was priceless”, he said. Campanella believes the fun part of turkey hunting is being able to call them in. He adds about the hunt, “It took about an hour and 15 minutes from the bird’s first gobble to the shot.” The two had to be patient and make sure they didn’t over call. “Checking in with a yelp or a purr every 10 minutes is what fooled him”, he said. Both Timber Echo Game Calls slate and mouth calls were used to fool the gobbler.
