Guest Post: DIY Candy Wedding Favours

My favourite wedding favours are always the ones you get to eat – especially sweets. Which is why I decided to share with you this super-simple DIY wedding favour: candy-filled votive holders wrapped in cellophane. It’s inexpensive and easy to make, and the best part is that you can adapt it in so many ways to suit any colour scheme or wedding style.
Materials:
– votive holders (I used IKEA’s GALEJ tealight holders , which are only $2 per package of four)
– candy (I used chocolate-covered cranberries bought in bulk)
– cardstock (8 1/2 x 11” sheets)
– ribbon
– cellophane (I found a large roll for only $10 in Chinatown. Dollar stores are another inexpensive source.)
How to:
1. Create tags using the Mailing Label Wizard in Microsoft Word, selecting the option to have a full page of the same label. I used the template for Avery Standard 3261S, but experiment on regular bond paper to find a size that works for you. You’ll also want to test out various font styles and sizes, as well as ink colours. Once you’ve decided on a label that works for you, print and cut out your tags, then punch a hole in each.
2. Cut cellophane to size. I used 18”-square pieces for votive holders approximately 2” high. You need enough cellophane to come up all sides of the votive holder and create a nice pouf at the top, when gathered. Cellophane can be tricky to work with: It’s super static-y and easily attracts pet hair and dust. Make sure your work area is clear of both before you start. And when cutting cellophane, it’s easier to slide your scissors to make the cut, so you get a smooth edge instead of a jagged one.
3. Wrap votive holders: First, fill them with candy, then place each filled votive holder in the centre of a cellophane square. Gather the four corners of the cellophane, then cinch it at the top of the votive holder with a ribbon, tying a knot. If you find this part difficult, cinch the cellophane with a twist-tie before adding your ribbon
4. Attach the tag, threading the ribbon through the hole, then tie a bow.
Variations:
There are endless possibilities to adapt this DIY candy favour to suit your own wedding.
- Candy: Choose your favourite childhood sweet, or go for a treat in your colour scheme. Jelly beans, caramels, Hersey’s Kisses, gum balls, chocolates…
- Votive holders: Votives come in clear or coloured glass, even patterned, and in many sizes. You can also use small juices glasses or individual ramekins. Be creative.
- Cellophane: I used clear, but you can also try coloured or patterned. Or tulle netting is another option.
- Ribbon: Besides the millions of different types of ribbons, you can also customize the favour by tying a knot instead of a bow, using two or more types of ribbon, or adding a flower or other small decoration.
- Tags: In any colour cardstock you want, cut out tags in other shapes, such as circles, squares or hearts. Or forego the tag and use a sticker or adhesive label instead. Write the bride and groom’s names, their initials or wedding date, or a short message to the guests.
