A Beautiful Vintage Wedding in Edmonton
I love this next bride because she just might be more wedding obsessed than I am! Jacquelyn fully admits that she’s dreamed about her fairytale wedding since she was a little girl and adorably used to fight with her friends during playtime on who would play the bride. And admittedly, at the young age of 16, she registered an account with an online wedding site, placing her wedding date at 2010. In 2011 (close!) she had the wedding that she always wanted and over the past two years, she’s even made a business out of her love of weddings by launching Hitched Wedding Design . The reception decor is absolutely swoon worthy, with it’s bold, detailed linens and white manzanita centerpieces adorned with delicate orchids. And we can’t forget about the groom Mike, who is part of the military. The shot of him watching Jacquelyn walk down the aisle is a total tear-jerker. While I cannot say that a winter wedding has always been a part of my dream vision (my husband is in the Canadian military, which means you are pretty limited to the times of year you can take time off for these things), I quickly embraced it and now looking at the photos, it couldn’t have been more perfect. My original vision was the perfect blend of vintage charm meets tented garden wedding. As all my friends would tell you, I have always loved and obsessed over anything vintage, lace, or damask. So embracing the best of that winter wonderland beauty, I brought the tented garden inside after being inspired by a beautiful white Manzanita branch centrepiece I saw online. All of my centrepieces were DIY. I had natural sandblasted Manzanita branch trees with orchid blooms “growing” off the branches. Indoor winter garden fantasy? Check. I had a ceiling treatment done to bring in the tented effect and up-lighted it with whimsical swirling branches to pull the space together. Tented garden? Check. Now for the vintage charm part, I decided to pull that in with damask flocked table linens, beautifully coordinating stationary, and damask motifs on my mitsumata tree fantasy cake which I had sketched the idea for myself. I found the perfect lace wedding gown with capped sleeves and keyhole back and birdcage veil to complete the “Old Hollywood” vintage look. With my hubby in his military dress uniform, we looked like a couple straight out of the 40’s. Being on the more eclectic side, I opted for non-matching bridesmaids’ dresses, still coordinated in charcoal grey and the boys in stylish grey tuxes with different ties. I knew I wanted to bring a pop of colour via the florals. I infused a blend of purples and bold fuscia vanda orchids with classic ivory roses, white anemones, and mini green hydrangea to pull in that “gardeny” feel. The wedding favours were also DIY, picking up the mini glass apocethary jars from a discount store and filling them with purple wrapped dark chocolate kisses (my husband’s favourite) and white heart shaped mints to compliment. So all that and a few extra accents here and there and voila: vintage charm meets modern winter garden wedding!
Details aside, what I’ve learned the most through this experience is that at the end of the day, when the lights go back on and all is torn down, the wedding is about you and your man, your love and commitment to each other. It’s about the people who love you, and were there for you through it all, not the people who weren’t. To my surprise, some of my greatest challenges in this process were not the detail related things, but the people related things beyond my control. At the end of the day, I have no regrets and am thankful for both the good parts and the stretching parts. My wedding and the whole process has been an opportunity for me to express myself creatively, share joy with family and friends, grow as an individual and counterpart to my husband. Plus, I know have the insider’s experience on being a bride myself, which I think may come in handy for all my future wedding planning with Bridezil…. er brides who are real people, who get stressed, who want their day to be perfect, and sometimes just need someone to be there for them too.
