The 2014-15 Pennsylvania Trapping Season began on October 26th. Trapping for Coyote, Fox, Opossum, Raccoon, Striped Skunk, and Weasel will continue statewide until February 22nd. Fur trappers in NWPA have success with many species thanks to conservation efforts. The Pennsylvania Game Commission, established in 1895, is the agency responsible for wildlife conservation and management in PA. NWPA is historically known as a top producer of furbearers and its residents were instrumental in the creation of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Chris Buck, of Corry, is having an outstanding start to the trapping season. He shared some of his photos and some trapping tips with me this week. Chris began trapping at the age of 13, but has found a renewed interest in furtaking in recent years. During the first week of trapping, he harvested15 raccoon and 5 fox. The most recent fox was a beautiful grey fox. His largest fox this year measured 44 inches. The largest raccoon weighed over 21 pounds. Chris uses marshmallows to bait raccoons with dog proof sets. The foxes are trapped using bobcat scent and dirt hole sets.

Mink and Muskrat furtaking season will open on November 22nd and continue through January 11th. Beaver trapping will be allowed beginning December 26th and will continue through March31st.  Bobcat and Fisher openers are scheduled for December 26th with Bobcat season continuing until January 11th. Fisher furtaking will continue through December 25th.
