Cooper’s hawk: UPDATE 1/20/09

Cooper’s hawks aren’t uncommon, but one is making itself right at home this winter along Erie’s busiest roads.
A Cooper’s hawk is menacing backyard feeders from State Street to Cherry Street, bounded roughly by 32nd and 26th streets. The Cooper’s hawk is known primarily as a bird hunter, but the fact that droves of fat squirrels live in Erie Cemetery along that northern sighting boundary probably is just coincidence.
Watch for it afternoons along the utility wires or bare tree branches near 26th and State streets, or warmer mornings in the cemetery’s tall trees at 26th and Cherry. It’s also a backyard fencesitter in the neighborhoods around Central Tech High School, and in the colder weather has taken to alighting on chimney tops for benefit of a warm updraft.
The long, barred tail is a quick identifying mark.
UPDATE 1/20/09: The hawk, with two crows as wingmen, soared though light snow at 29th and Cherry streets about 8:35 a.m. this morning.
