NWPA’s Conewango Creek is named Pennsylvania’s 2015 River of the Year
Conewango Creek, in Warren County, has received 42% of the public’s online vote to receive this year’s Pennsylvania River of the Year honor. The Conewango Creek Watershed Association was the applicant for the winning waterway and will receive a $10,000 Leadership Grant towards River of the Year activities. The 2015 Pennsylvania River of the Year designation will also raise awareness to Conewango Creek and the recreational opportunities it provides.
Conewango Creek is a tributary to the Allegheny River. This stream stretches 71 miles from Western New York through NWPA and is rich in biodiversity. Conewango Creek supports the lives of 19 native freshwater mussel species, ospreys, eagles, herons, many species of fish, and even otters!
Conewango Creek is also a designated PA Water Trail with six launch areas along it’s 13 miles of water flowing through Pennsylvania. Many activities and events will take place on Conewango Creek this year. Events such as public water safety courses, poker runs, a Fall Celebration, and the River of the Year Sojourn will take place in 2015. The River of the Year Sojourn will be a paddling event focused on the watershed’s history, wildlife, and local fisheries.
Now that Conewango Creek has received the 2015 River of the Year designation, this stream flowing through NWPA can expect to see more visitors. Conewango Creek Watershed Association Chairman Steve Kimball said, “Just to promote Conewango Creek for 2015 Pennsylvania River of the Year has brought a lot of awareness of the creek locally and regionally. The creek is now ‘on the radar’ for many people that never really thought much about it before.”
