The registry is a long-standing tradition in wedding history as a way for couples to indicate what they would love to start building a home together. Finding a perfect and personalized gift is not always easy, and luckily the invention of the registry in 1924 at Marshall Field’s department store has given us a little help!

Although there are many to choose from, the Williams-Sonoma Registry has a large variety of options and top-of-the-line products. A mixer that not only mixes but also makes pasta, slices, shreds, juices, grinds meat, AND makes ice cream- yes please!! Can you give us an overall explanation of how a registry with Williams-Sonoma works?

Creating a Williams-Sonoma registry is easy. A registrant can choose to start a registry online, go into a store, or attend a private “Store is Yours” event.

A “Store is Yours” event is a wonderful way for couples to get together at their local store to register.  We like to think of the event as an “Engagement Party” for registrants. These events are held while the store is closed so that our Registry Specialists can spend quality time explaining the features and benefits of our products.

In addition to helpful advice from our knowledgeable associates, Williams-Sonoma registrants also enjoy exclusive vendor offers, convenience of managing their registries online, thank you note manager that track gifts purchased, and an unlimited 10% completion discount, good for 6 months after the wedding, on items left on the registry plus any new additions.

What items do you suggest a couple register for, and what are the most popular items for young couples?

Our knowledgeable Gift Registry Specialists are trained to ask the right questions to determine a couple’s personal style of cooking, dining and entertaining in order to create the perfect registry. Some of our most popular registry items include the Williams-Sonoma exclusive All-Clad D5 cookware, the KitchenAid mixer, Breville Panini Press and cutlery.

All-Clad is the #1 registered cookware brand at Williams-Sonoma it and represents the best in American craftsmanship. All Clad’s newest product line-D5 is suitable for use on any cooktop, including induction.  The five ply construction provides the most even heating, eliminates hot spots, warping and the stainless steel interior provides effortless cleanup.

The KitchenAid stand mixer has long been considered the “workhorse of the kitchen”.  It was introduced to US homes in 1919 as the “best kitchen aid”.  With the addition of a number of attachments, the KitchenAid easily converts from a mixer, to a pasta maker, slicer, shredder, ice cream maker, juicer, and meat grinder.   Over 13,000 KitchenAid stand mixers are requested from registrants every year!

The Breville Panini Press is another favorite among our registrants. This versatile appliance is perfect for quick weeknight meals and casual entertaining, doing double duty as an indoor grill and sandwich press.  Many of our registrants love to use it to grill meats and vegetables for fillings, then toast the sandwiches to crisp golden perfection!

Lastly, a great set of knives is an essential tool to every kitchen. Williams-Sonoma carries several lines or premium cutlery brands. One of the newest is Shun.  Made by Japan’s premier blade producer, their factories are located in a famous Samurai sword making center where the tradition of fine blade forging has been practiced for over 700 years.  The blending of the ancient Damascus steel process with the modern clad construction techniques produces blades with a super sharp cutting edge.

How many items do you suggest couples put on their registry?

We recommend that couples register for at least half of the number of their expected attendees. For example, if the couple expects to have 100 people coming to the event, we’d recommend registering for at least 50 gifts, each of which may be comprised of smaller items.

For instance, a couple may want to consider 6 wine stems as a single “gift”.  50 gifts will likely be 75-125 different items.  If the couple plans to have a shower with 30 people attending, then we’d suggest adding 30 more gifts, so the registry contains a minimum of 80 gifts (or 120-200 items).  Many couples register at 1 to 3 places.  If the couple has registered at other places, it’s best to not shorten the list by much because many guests come in and buy several items and you want to keep a wide price range available.

How has registry changed over the years? What new trends have you seen?

Gift Registry at Williams-Sonoma has changed dramatically over the years!  Our founder, Chuck Williams, recognized the need for couples to have the ability to register for products that were essential to set up a well equipped kitchen.  He registered his first bride almost 50 years ago by suggesting and listing her selections on a tablet and checking them off as the gifts were purchased.

Thanks to advances in technology, registrants now enjoy the convenience of managing every aspect of their registries online. Trends in gift selections as well as who is registering has changed over the years.  We are seeing the traditional couples just out of college, more mature couples, couples planning second marriages, couples having commitment ceremonies, and 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrants.

They are coming to the stores together, registering to build the kitchen and home of their dreams by thoughtfully choosing items that they will truly use daily, products of the highest quality that will last a lifetime!
