TOP TEN BEST DANCE SCENES IN A MOVIE!!!!

Kinda random post, right? Well, I was actually thinking about this last night. I chose to have a mellow, stay-in weekend for the past few days and I spent last night catching up on a few of my all-time fave dance movies. Even though I don’t do much dancing anymore, I still love watching the movies. Anyway, I googled “best dance movies” to see if there were any that I had missed, and I was slightly disappointed with what came up. Sure, Save the Last Dance was fun and yes, I own a copy, but in the top ten? Puh–lease! 😉 In light of that, I decided to compose my own list of the top ten best dance scenes EVER. (And please note, I am talking about specific dance scenes, cause yes, I know some of these movies are kinda lame!) Enjoy!!! 🙂

10. Dance With Me: Yes its about ballroom dancing. But Vanessa Williams and Chayenne are friggin sweet in their final dance. I’m pretty sure it was this movie that made me take ballroom lessons!

9. White Nights: Ok, its true. I don’t know very many people–especially my age–that have actually seen this movie. Trust me, its definitely worth it! I can’t pinpoint one scene in this movie other than suggest you watch every scene that pairs the genius of Gregory Hines’s tap dancing with the brilliance of Baryshnikov (by far, the best ballerina ever!)

8. Footloose: C’mon. Early Kevin Bacon living in a town where it is illegal to dance? You gotta love that. Watch the end scene at the school dance–there is one kid who is amazing with all of his pop and lock moves!

7. Singing in the Rain: Another classic! Best scene is where Gene Kelly is super pumped, tap dancing in the rain, throwing his umbrella everywhere with that huge grin on his face. Cliche? Sure, but definitely doesn’t take away from the pure enjoyment you get when watching him dance.

6. Grease: What little girl didn’t love this movie?! I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I can still recite every line in this movie, complete with song lyrics….as well as reenact most of the dance moves! Another one of the Travolta classics that demonstrates how John really could dance!! Check out the fluidity of his hips in the closing scene when he and Newton-John are dancing down the steps of the funhouse. The guy knows what he is doing!

5. Step Up: Whew, I have to admit that it was tough putting Step Up all the way down at #5. I love this movie. In fact, it might be my all-time fave dance movie. However, when I am thinking about specific dance scenes, I couldn’t quite pinpoint one that bumped it any higher. The whole movie just rocks. Oh yeah, and Channing Tatum is hot.

4. Flashdance: Just a steel-town girl on a Saturday night……talk about a movie that began trends! I still see women walking around in off-the-shoulder sweatshirts (not gonna lie, I have one too!) Nothing pulls at the heart strings more than a blue collar girl who wants to be a ballerina….and does a bomb final audition performance. OH WHAT A FEELING!!

3. Center Stage: Yes, we all know the acting sucked. But really, is that why anyone went to see this? I love this movie because it was one of the first that actually took dancers and tried to turn them into actors instead of the other way around (AHEM, Save the Last Dance). Ethan Stiefel is an amazing dancer, and I love the final recital piece where Amanda Schull (Jody) rocks the bright red leotard and toe shoes and whips out some friggin’ amazing fouettes.

2. Dirty Dancing: Nobody puts Baby in the corner. ‘Nuff said.

1. Step Up 2: The Streets: Yes, this was the second Step Up movie and the actual movie itself was not that great….but holy hell is the final dance number amazing! The kids are all dancing in the rain, and the puddle splashing alone makes such an impact on the actual steps. The kid named Moose rocks the dance too. My favorite part is when Bounce by Timberland comes on with all the breathing and Moose starts dancing. Actually, just watch it yourself….you’ll totally love it.
