Urban Ottawa Engagement from Joel Bedford
Today’s engagement session fits into one of folder of favorites, captured by Joel Bedford Fine Art Weddings . Savannah & Blake wanted an urban styled engagement shoot to contrast their rustic October wedding. Downtown Ottawa served as a beautiful backdrop for this photogenic couple, who met one fateful night while both were waiting for a taxi.
How did you two meet?
June 2010 – A random, chance meeting while I was waiting for a taxi in front of The Standard (Ottawa) after a night out with the girls. We spoke for a few minutes until Blake suggested we grab a drink sometime, I took his number and called him the very next day. We went on our first date a few days later and have been inseparable ever since.
Tell us about the proposal!
July 20th, 2012, I came home from the gym after work to find Blake (who normally would still be working at his desk) pacing around with a drink in his hand, music playing and groceries for dinner laid out in the kitchen. I noticed a few things around the condo were extra tidy and a family photo was missing from a frame. When I asked Blake where it went, he said he made a photo album that day and would show me as soon as I was out of the shower so he could start on dinner. All very unusual in retrospect. We sat in the living room and proceeded to look through an album of photos he had taken from the past 2+ years chronicling our life together as a couple; all the trips, events, concerts, friends and family that touched our lives were there as I started to tear up. I flipped to a page of photos from Blake’s most recent birthday and there, inside one of the plastic pockets, was my engagement ring. He took it out of the pocket, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After the tears, hugs and kisses were sated, he told me he had no intention of making dinner but we had a reservation for dinner in an hour at Whalesbone (our favourite restaurant) and we’d both be going skydiving the next day! (Originally a gift for Blake’s birthday and planned for Sunday that weekend). It ended up being one of the most memorable and special weekends of our lives.
Tell us about your October wedding
We held the wedding October 20th in the backyard of Blake’s parents’ home in Orleans. In terms of theme, our goal was to keep everything very intimate and authentic to our style and preferences. I wanted to give the outdoors an ‘inside’ feeling by adding coziness and warmth to the yard with a beautifully decorated open walled-tent, fabrics, blankets and a great space heater! We, and our wedding stylist Catalina Bloch, kept decorations as simple as possible since the yard itself didn’t need a lot of embellishment. The colours of the yard (muted tones of brown and green were accented with ivory/cream fabric and purple flowers). It was “casual refined” with many vintage touches thanks to my in-laws and their great eye in collecting antique furniture pieces. It turned out really well!
