Canadian Stationery Feature: Uh Oh My Deer

I would have to say that one of the things I love most about a wedding is the stationery. Aside from being a pieces of paper with information written on it, an invitation can tell a guest just about everything, setting the stage for the style of wedding that’s soon to come. So when I received a note from Alexandra Joy Wig ( Pink & Honey ), an event stylist based out of Calgary, to showcase four Canadian stationery artists, I jumped at the opportunity. Like Alexandra, it’s been a mission of mine to support Canadian talent because seriously, we have do have the best of the best!

The four artists come from Calgary, Edmonton & Toronto and each submitted a suite of their liking to Pink & Honey who styled the pieces and were captured by the ever talented Shannon Yau Photography . I also interviewed each artist to learn a bit more about their inspiration for each suite.

The first artist featured for the day is Kate of Uh Oh My Deer who created a hand illustrated invitation suite that is just too charming for words.

How long have you been designing stationery?
I have been designing stationary for the past 10 years- things have changes a lot in the past few though. When I started out, clients were looking for a lot of stacked cardstock, vellum overlays, and embellishments, they were pretty but could get really over-the-top really fast. Now a days, things are a lot more organic and individual.

Describe your inspiration behind this design.
The inspiration behind this design was a couple who loved spending time in the woods, exploring and being in love. I started with an illustration of the couple, added a few woodland friends and then lightened the whole thing up with a colour palette of mint and mustard.

Describe your style.
My style is fresh, organic, and natural.

What or who are the main influences on your style/designs?
For the most part, I find my inspiration in the beautiful world around me, my daughter, and the mountains- the colours and textures found there.

What is your favourite colour combination or design detail that you are in love with right now?
I am really in love with the colour palette of caramel, blush, and navy. I am working on a painting right now that will become a new design for my 2014 lineup.
