Sweet Ontario Wedding at Maplewood Hall
Today’s absolutely stunning couple, Jess & Greg married in a location they fell in love with when they first visited and it definitely lends itself to a cottage ‘feel’. I adore when the venue has surroundings that add to the decor of the wedding and it makes it all seem almost effortless. I also love the fact that the bride + groom incorporated a tree element in their menus and kept the colour palette very soft, next to the pop of colour for the bridesmaid dresses. Says Jenn Stark (photographer): “Jess and Greg are two of the happiest, most genuine, and friendliest people out there and they are absolutely darling as a pair. These guys got married just outside of the city, underneath the trees smack dab in the middle of wilderness. You know it’s going to be good when you have to drive down a long and winding dirt road for a long while (….and kick up clouds, I mean massive clouds of dust on the way!) to get there, and when you arrive you find that you’ve entered into this idyllic little spot, a converted summer camp with a stone and wood building to one side, old wood cabins scattered about, long wooden benches in a clearing where the ceremony is held, and plenty of tall shady trees……. It truly is a place where you feel like you are somewhere else completely, and it couldn’t have suited Jess and Greg’s laid-back style any better. Despite it being perhaps one of the hottest and most humid days of the summer, I don’t think I ever saw either one without a smile on their face the entire day. Nothing could be more clear than just how excited Jess and Greg were that their day had finally come.”
Greg and I stumbled across our wedding venue on a walk in the woods about 8 months into our relationship. It was the first time I ever went home from a place and looked it up because I thought “I could get married there.” When we got engaged a year later I asked Greg what he had in mind for a wedding venue, and he said, “Somewhere like that place we found when we were walking in the woods last winter.” We did some research and looked into a few other places, but Maplewood Hall was our first choice from the beginning. I love the story of how we found it, and it just felt right. We wanted our wedding to represent who we are, and the rustic setting in among the trees suited us and our love of walks in the woods and time at the cottage.
What was the inspiration behind your decor and colour choices?
The inspiration for our wedding colours came from birch trees – green, cream and silver. Because the colour palette was so soft I wanted to add a punch of colour in the bridesmaid dresses. Since birch was the inspiration for our colour palette, we thought it would be beautiful to add a touch of real birch to our decor. Greg and I went up to the cottage and spent a full day searching through the woods for fallen branches and then cleaning them up and cutting them down to size so that our florist could use them in our centerpieces. Our florist did a wonderful job incorporating the birch with green and white flowers and succulents to create a look that was woodsy yet elegant.
What was your favorite moment on your wedding day?
My favourite moment was walking down the tree-lined path towards the outdoor chapel where our ceremony was held. The path comes over a hill and then curves down towards the guests and I loved seeing all of my friends and family sitting there together, not to mention sneaking a peek at Greg before he was able to see me! I couldn’t have asked for anything better than getting to marry Greg under the shade of the trees surrounded by all of our loved ones.
What advice do you have for other brides currently planning their own weddings?
My tip to other brides planning their wedding is to really stay true to who you are and what you love. It was the little things that really made our whole wedding experience memorable – the memories Greg and I made together searching for birch bark, seeing our guests enjoy lawn games during the cocktail hour and laughing with them when they showed off their hula hoop skills to get us to kiss. We can’t thank our wonderful photographers Jenn & Dave Stark enough for so beautifully capturing all the love and the laughter so we can remember it always!
