Rustic Vintage Wedding at Saunders Farm (Ontario)
Remember this Egin street diner engagement ? I’m pretty darn excited that Kaitlin & Keith wanted to share her wedding photos with you all today. Captured again by Blair Gable Photography , the wedding is filled with utterly charming DIY details that will make any DIY-er giddy with excitement. Rustic and vintage brides, today’s your day.
What was your inspiration behind your overall wedding decor and colour choices?
I wanted everything to have a relaxed at-home feeling. I wanted our guests to walk in and feel like they were coming to our house for a nice dinner. (Not an easy task with 200 people in a room!) It was important to us to have our guests feel at home and relaxed so they could have great time. I didn’t choose wedding colours, persay – it was more of a general palette of natural and muted tones. I’m not a fan of when things match too much, but I wanted everything to compliment each other. With the gorgeous surroundings, it was easy to go with natural colours you would find on the farm. Lots of wood, light pinks, yellows, ivory… it was soft and beautiful.
Kaitlin made the boutonnieres which were wooden flowers glued to pins.
What was your favorite moment from your wedding day?
There are a few I’ll treasure always. I remember being in the lobby of the church with my dad and thinking “Eeep! This is it!” and looking at my dad and seeing how proud he was. I remember turning toward Keith to say our vows and seeing tears in his eyes. I remember the congregation clapping for us and feeling so lucky to have so many people loving on us. I remember having our first dance and thinking “We should have practiced this” but then Keith dipping me super low and thinking “God this is the best day”. And I remember the father-daughter dance and my dad saying all the loveliest things a daughter could want to hear and tearing up and looking around at all the people watching us who were crying too.
My parents surprised me with my beloved yellow rain boots at the front of the church, holding some flowers in the gorgeous display my mother and cousin created for the day. I’ve always loved shoes, but these were the pair that started my obsession! I used to nap with them on my hands when I was small because I loved those things!
How did you two meet?
Keith and I met at a BBQ a mutual friend was hosting. Keith stopped by to drop something off to Jeremy, the host, and had to wait around a while because Jer was taking a nap! He had plans somewhere else that night, but stuck around for a bit to see if he could say hi to the host himself. I happened to get there while he was killing time, and he didn’t end up leaving the party as he had originally planned. We chatted for about 7 hours at that BBQ, and made Jeremy our MC at our wedding!
Kaitlin’s great grandmother’s rosary was wrapped around her lace bound bouquet as her ‘something old’ and her grandmother’s holy spirit pin kept it in place as her ‘something borrowed’.
I painted the insides of the mason jars messily with ivory paint. I wanted it to be streaky to add some texture and allow light through when we put candles inside. We used battery powered tea lights inside them to ensure they would shine all night and be safe. My mother had come up with the idea of this long chandelier over our head table. So my dad got a long piece of barn board from family friends who live on a dairy farm, he twisted wire around the jars I had painted, and we spaced them out evenly. I loved the focal point it created at the front of the room!
The same family friends lent us the old barn windows I used to create the seating chart. I got window paint markers and spent an afternoon in the backyard drawing on them. I used black on the back of the windows for the table numbers, then white on the front to write my guests names down.
For my beautiful sisters/bridesmaids, I wanted to get vintage dresses. We all love vintage style and with the homemade feel of the day, thought it would add to the fun. (my mother in law made the flower girl dress Keith’s niece wore on the day. We made it to go with tge bridesmaid style in a complimentary colour) We found the yellow dress in Toronto and had to have it. I just sort of hoped we would find something that complimented it for my maid of honour. We always go to a big vintage sale on Ottawa each November and I had in mind this pale pink colour. I saw the pink dress peeking out from across the room and when I pulled it out, couldn’t believe how similar it was to the yellow one. My sister put it on and it fit like a glove! It was meant to be.
Photos of the wedding days of both our parents and both our two sets of grandparents were behind the wall of the pie table as an extra nod back to our history
Do you have any advice for other brides-to-be?
Don’t sweat it. Really. The day will come and go and if you’re married to the one you love after it all, then your wedding was a success. Also, when planning, pick what you love and then stick to it. There are a million different ways you can style your wedding, and they’re all gorgeous, so don’t worry about if your decisions were right once they’re made. All that will matter that day is the smiles and hugs and love all around you!
