Special Engagement from Joel Bedford Photography

Ever wonder just how your ‘other half’ sees you? Today I get to share a unique engagement which was a special memory for the bride & groom-to-be. Joel and Justyna are the talented duo that run Joel Bedford Photography (see their past feature here ). And while they’re normally behind the lens, they had an opportunity to capture each other while in Italy with just a tripod and a camera. It truly made for some stunning images and at first glance many appear to be paintings. As Justyna says it, “It’s so nice and romantic to see how your partner sees you through the lens.” I couldn’t agree more.

Joel and I (Justyna) got engaged after 3 years of friendship, 2 years of dating and 5 years of working together. We both run Joel Bedford Photography! On April 30th, Joel proposed. We were jetting off to Italy 3 days later to attend a friends wedding there and kept the whole thing a secret! The whole proposal and trip felt like a fairy tale! How lucky are we that we not only get to embark on this amazing new chapter in our lives, but we get to gallivant around Italy to boot! In between all the site seeing, museum hopping, gelato eating, we realized we had an amazing opportunity: to shoot our own engagement session in Florence. We had some fancy clothes with us for the wedding, and so we decided to grab our tripod and timer, and hit the streets. The weather was a bit balmy and rainy but we did get one sunny afternoon. After a day of site seeing, we quickly changed and headed out – only to realize we barely had 25% battery charge in the camera. The session was really quick, romantic and spontaneous. We found this really great courtyard of a film school and started there. I was really afraid of disrupting any locals, but this wonderful lady who lived near the courtyard saw what was happening, came over and stuck that purple flower in my hair. I can’t tell you how much joy, excitement and gratitude I felt.

We took turns photographing each other in the neighborhood near our hotel, and then stuck the camera on a tripod for quick shots of us together. We ended up near the Ponte Vecchio and finished there (with a mere 5% battery to go!)

Whenever I look at these photos, I’m reminded of that wonderful sun, the beautiful trip we took, and the spontaneously, lovely and romantic time in our lives we’re at.
