The Female Traveler’s Guide To A Carry-On Beauty Routine
There aren’t many beauty and style guides on my site, as I often travel sans makeup (I do love wearing it at home, though). I also haven’t put heat or styling products in my hair in over a year aside for the occasional volumizing spray. That being said, I’m a big fan of nourishing my skin, keeping my locks healthy (which is why I don’t use blowdryers and irons) and occasionally bringing along some makeup for a night out. The following are some of my carry-on beauty routine essentials — because I never check a bag — with a few fashion items thrown in, as well.
1. Yoga Download ($10+/month). Part of being beautiful is being healthy inside and out. As I hate the gym and don’t like packing workout gear, no matter how portable, I was delighted to discover YogaDownload.com this winter. No equipment is needed, though a yoga mat is nice ( I’m a fan of the Manduka brand ). Instead, bring a device that can get you online, find Wi-Fi and log on to the site to choose your class (they have over 900!). Along with making me feel stronger and leaner, it helps me wake me up and gives me energy throughout the day.
2. Onurth Facial Serum ($38). While a bit pricey for a moisturizer, I think if you’re going to splurge or invest in something it might as well be your face. These organic cold pressed hazelnut and macadamia nut oils — also containing Egyptian rose geranium, clary sage and high altitude lavender — literally make you feel like you’ve just gotten a professional facial. Because the oils are all natural nut oils your skin absorbs the moisture without looking greasy. Plus, it’s small enough (1 ounce) to stow in your TSA liquids ziplock.
3. Oil Of Olay Cleansing Cloths ($9.59). I use these as makeup remover that doesn’t count against my liquids or dry out my sensitive under eye area — not to mention they’re uber refreshing if you’re hiking or cycling in a hot destination. Especially on long backpacking trips I highly recommend carrying these.

4. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($20). As I don’t wear a lot of makeup, red lipstick (or Underage Red) helps bring my look from day to evening without much effort. This is one of my favorite makeup items, and of all the brands I’ve tested none have stolen my heart — and pucker — quite like Kat Von D. It’s rich, bold and literally does not move, even during a night of dancing a drinking.
A bit cheaper and almost as good, though not quite as stay-put, is Physicians Formula Sexy Booster™ Sexy Glow Glossy Stain ($15.64). If I’m feeling money conscious I’ll opt for this one instead and am happy with the results, especially as it always seems to go on perfectly even when I don’t have a mirror and am on the subway (trust me, this is no un-praiseworthy feat considering how clumsy I am).
5. Catskill Soap Company Soaps (4-for-$25). Loofahs and liquid soaps take up a lot of space. Plus, travel-sized liquid soaps never last very long. I love this all-natural goat’s milk bar soap (the milk is purchased from a homesteader in Pennsylvania) as it’s small in size — a bit bigger than the circumference of a beer can — and heals dry, chicken-like skin uber fast. It cured a patchy bit on my neck almost overnight!

6. Stonewear Designs Breathe Pant ($68). Not only are these super comfy pants eco-friendly, crafted from recycled PET plastic bottles — but they can pass as lounge pants or dress pants, killing two birds with one stone in your carry-on.

7. Clarins Instant Concealer ($30). Their small 0.5-ounce concealer tube lasts for months — maybe longer, I’m still using my first one almost daily since I bought it four months ago — and can take you from looking tired and rough to bright eyed and bushy tailed. As someone with sensitive under-eye skin (I’ve gotten patchy rashes under my right eye numerous times) this cream is also super gentle and non-irritating, though no matter what you’re using try never to pull on this area!

8. Craghoppers Women’s Nosilife Long Sleeve Tee ($35). This lightweight casual shirt is quick drying, has UV protection and contains insect repellent, making it especially great for the beach, boat trips and camping (or as a carefree top with jeans or khakis).

9. Travel Quote Collection Totes ($20.33). A bit of shameless self-promotion here. I have a Travel Quote Collection of accessories where I showcase a number of items with my travel photos and inspiring travel quotes. I’m particularly partial to the tote bags — which can be personalized if you email me at editorial@wordpress.com with your preferred quote and destination — and often carry the Joshua Tree California bag , which states “Wanderlust (n.) a strong desire or urge to wander or travel and explore the world.” Makes for a great wanderlust-inspiring everyday tote or beach bag.

10. MBeze Dabber Dust ($6.98). I have a slightly embarrassing confession that after 28 years of life I’m finally able to freely talk about: I have hyperhydrosis. Meaning I over-sweat to the point that I had to have 100 Botox injections in my hands to subside the painful perspiration. Carrying a huge stick of antiperspirant around isn’t always an option, at least not a comfortable one; so when I discovered MBeze Dabber Dust, which is about the size of an Oreo, I was excited to give it a try. I typically apply regular antiperspirant in the morning (I use Degree Sport for Men. Yes, you read that right) and then carry the powder to re-apply throughout the day.

11. Lancôme Miracle Cushion Liquid Compact Foundation ($32.74). I was swayed into buying this liquid-in-a-sponge foundation when wandering the makeup section at Lord & Taylor — but, wow, was I glad! Not only is the coverage great — not to mention I can use it as a concealer — but it doesn’t count toward my carry-on liquid allowance since the foundation is absorbed into a sponge for you to squeeze out with the applicator.
12. LUSH Godiva Shampoo Bar ($11.95). LUSH is a company largely focused on using all-natural and organic ingredients. Their Godiva Shampoo Bar features ingredients like Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter, Cold Pressed Organic Jojoba Oil and Organic Macadamia Nut Oil, and is so hydrating it can double as a conditioner. And despite being smaller than a hockey puck can last up to almost three months (I know from experience!). Bonus: it doesn’t count toward your liquids!
