Making the summer memorable
Memories made while enjoying the outdoors can last a lifetime. From catching lightning bugs on a foggy night night, to swimming at the beach on a hot day, NWPA summers can provide memorable experiences for all ages.
There are many events around the area to participate in during this splendid time of the year, but it is also important to take the time to relax with family and friends while taking it all in. Catching a few fish at a local farm pond, watching hummingbirds dart through the air in a garden, picking ripe berries, or soaking in the sun while paddling along one of the many area waterways, are all great ways to make a summer memory. Even taking a walk or casual bike ride is relaxing after a day of excitement. A countryside view in NWPA is not to be overlooked.
Lake Erie and Presque isle bay are renown for boating and fishing, the beaches, spectacular sunsets, numerous trails, and so many other recreation opportunities. Presque Isle State Park is a popular tourist destination attracting about 4 million visitors each year. A day at the beach is a tradition I’ve always enjoyed. Some days the waves are large enough to lift you off of your feet and carry you back toward shore.
Camping in NWPA can also be a great way to relax in Summer. There are many campgrounds and State Parks in NWPA to spend a weekend or a longer vacation. State Parks and recreation areas like Pymatuning, Oil Creek, Cook Forest, Woodcock Creek Lake, Buckaloons, Tionesta, and Chapman Dam, are all places where camping is allowed. Dewdrop, Willow Bay, and Kiasutha campgrounds, are all located along the Kinzua Reservoir in beautiful forested settings. Some of my favorite summer memories are made while camping. Cooking over an open fire and sleeping in a tent are some of the experiences that make camping fun. Looking up to the starry skies while gathering around the light of a warm outdoor fire is a great way to spend a summer night.
Many people travel to other places in NWPA, enjoying all that the area has to offer. Small historic towns situated along French Creek and the Allegheny River offer nearby day trip opportunities. It always amazes me how much wildlife I see while taking a drive through NWPA. I often see critters like foxes, porcupines, ruffed grouse, deer, wood ducks, herons, kestrels, turkey, black bear, and so much more. It always seems like I can’t get to the camera quick enough. It is wise to just cherish the moment and admire wildlife and nature for what it is.
