Cancun is located on the north eastern part of Yucatan Peninsula alongside the Caribbean Coast in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo . And it is one of the renowned tourist destinations in Mexico. Rich wildlife, white sand beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, ancient Maya architecture remains, tons of recreational activities and a top-class stay in one of the best resorts in Cancun are some of the few reasons which makes Cancun, one of the major holiday destination.

Below are some of the important attractions, because of which people love to be here.

1. Akumal

A small town situated just 37 kilometers (23 miles) from Playa Del Carmen, this is one of the most peaceful places in Riviera Maya. Along with beautiful beaches, Akumal — meaning “Land of the turtle” — is a breeding ground for these namesake creatures. Swim with turtles and marine life at local beaches, and visit the Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) to learn about area’s ecosystems, native species and local environment.

2. The Spider Monkey Reserve

This nature park was founded in 1950, and is an ecotourism attraction organized by the local community of Punta Laguna. In 2002 is was declared a nature reserve by the government, with 5,367 hectares (13,262 acres). The hundreds of Spider Monkey are the main attraction, although you can also see howler monkeys, pumas, white-tailed deer, coatis and ocellated turkeys. Activities like hiking, bird watching, monkey watching, zip-lining and rappelling are available for tourists, although it’s recommended to visit the onsite archaeological dig and its 36 Mayan structures from the Late Pre classic period (300 B.C. – 250 A.D.).

3. Cancun Underwater Museum

A museum created by MUSA, a non-profit organization devoted to art of conservation, this museum consists of around 500 sculptures designed by Mexican sculptors. It’s an initiative to raise awareness among people to conserve the reef and marine life and the attraction features a collection of human statues interacting with nature in both positive and negative ways. The sculptures underwater help to grow artificial reefs more quickly because each statue is made up of PH-neutral cement. As coral life increases, the marine life does, too. Tourists can snorkel, scuba dive or go on a glass bottom boat to have amazing view of the underwater museum.

4. Coba

If you want to experience Mayan History and also avoid the crowds in Tulum and Chichen Itza, Coba is your destination. Coba is located in the southwest of Cancun, situated between two lagoons and linked to several other sites through plaster and stone roads. These roads are also known as Sacbe, or “white roads.” The sites are full of temples, palaces, ball courts (like “pok-ta-pok”) and pyramids like Nohoch Mul and Ixmoja, which is 138 feet high and have 130 steps to climb. Tourists can climb these steps and enjoy the stunning views from the top.

5. Rio Secreto Nature Reserve

This nature reserve is made up of stalactite- and stalagmite-filled caves, formed over centuries by an underground river. It’s the longest partially flooded cave on Yucatan Peninsula, stretching for 12 kilometers (seven miles). Explore the underground world with a local guide, and try your hand at subterranean swimming.
