The Lonely Planet Videos Japan
10Dear ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt this irregularly scheduled blogging to introduce to you…
…my secret project on travel in Japan!
Lonely Planet Videos Japan
Together with Lonely Planet and Alicia from Alicia Explores and Kash from Budget Traveller , I headed out to Tokyo last year to film some unusual things to do in the city.
Unusual things to do in Tokyo and beyond
The journey was quite the discovery, revealing (among other things and as if I didn’t already know) that I am a class A geek. When asked to talk to camera about a region, I read up all the night before and came prepared. History, culture, foods and flavours, pop trivia, the lot. What made it to tape? Well, you’ll have to watch and see ;-)
Surprise Discoveries
The second surprise discovery (which I’ve suspected for some time,) was that I have some trouble with walking. Up stairs. Down stairs. Along and into bushes. Really, the possibilities to embarrass yourself on camera are endless*.
But enough about me and Mario.
Let’s move on to Japan and getting you there!
Unusual things to see and do in Japan
As some of you longtime readers know, this wasn’t my first time. I’ve written about the highlights of Japan before (although years ago, in my early days of blogging before I found out even more.)
Since then, I’ve visited a Bond villain’s lair, found 7 things to do with volcanoes and had one of the most poignant moments of my life through an interview with a survivor of the Nagasaki Atom bomb.
In the snowy, icy north I warmed up at an Igloo Festival and marvelled at the mysterious snow monsters of Zao.
I drank seaweed in the name of understanding the secret to the longest life expectancy in the world and got back to nature with the star shaped sand on the tropical beaches of Okinawa. (Plus, rode on a buffalo-drawn cart. You know how it is.)
I’ve mulled about the kindness of strangers , hot springs for stressed monkeys and I’ve smoked some black eggs. (Well, sort of.)
Win a Trip to Japan
All you have to do is (and, no, I wasn’t consulted about this first) vote for the most appealing blogger out of the three of us.
I’m not kidding. Lost in translation as some might say ;-)
However, the good news is that you can still win even if you don’t vote for me (Allegedly. But I’ll know… and who knows how far my powers can reach?! Mwahaha…)
To win a trip to Japan
So, head over here and cast your vote. No-one’s watching…

* I’ve since had my eyes tested. A new prescription awaits ;-)
