Preseason scouting with trail cameras

Trail cameras are good tools for scouting deer. Utilizing these cameras to capture photos of animals while you are occupied with other pursuits can lead to a successful hunting season. Having multiple trail cameras set up at several locations allows you to scout different areas at the same time.

Setting up cameras along heavily traveled trails and feeding areas can help you pattern deer, and gives hunters an idea on a where to set up a tree stand. Trail cameras also can reveal if a big buck is frequently in the area. If your not seeing deer within a few days of setting up the trail camera, you may need to find a new spot. Some deer will be frightened by the flash of some models, so moving the trail camera around from time to time will keep the wary deer guessing. There are trail cameras available that have undetectable flashes. The trail cameras I use have low glow and don’t seem to bother the deer too much.

Scouting deer is fun and can lead to a productive deer season. Many deer use the same trails and feeding areas throughout most of the year.  During other times of the year, there is just no sure way to know where deer will be. The rut and peak breeding times is a prime example of this. This is when all bets are off and there is just no telling where the deer will be from one moment to the next.

It is good idea to see what is in the area you plan to hunt during this time of the year. A lot of bucks have core areas they call home. If you can find an area with quality deer now, it is a good bet some of these animals will still be around in hunting season.
