Fireworks and Dogs – Enjoying Independence Day the Ruffwear Way
For those of us in the US, Independence Day is almost here. While many are planning on heading out for Fourth of July festivities and firework displays, we thought we would throw out a different idea for those with dogs who get anxious around fireworks.
For many dogs, fireworks can cause extreme anxiety or nervousness. While there are countless websites out there with top ten lists on how to reduce the anxiety and create a comfortable space for your dog, we’d like to propose that you take your dog out for an evening in the wilderness where you know there will be no fireworks. Let the stars overhead or the fields of fireflies be your fireworks display! If you pay attention, nature can provide a display no human could recreate with explosives and pyrotechnics – and your dog will appreciate the peace, quiet and quality time spent with their favorite humans.
Here are a few tips to help you plan your dog’s independence night from fireworks:
1. Call ahead – make sure that the campground area that you are going is not planning a fireworks display. Better yet, hike into the backcountry where you know it will be peaceful.
2. Give your dog a job! Some people say that their dogs enjoy wearing a dog pack and carrying their own gear because it gives them a job and it boosts their confidence. Click here to learn more about choosing the right dog pack.
3. If you plan on staying out overnight, be sure to have a good sleeping system for your dog. If they are not used to camping overnight, it helps to have a bed or “place” that they know is theirs where they can go to relax.
We’d like to hear from you!
What are your plans this Fourth of July?
Where will you go to enjoy natures display?
