Erie-area fishing report for Feb. 22
This week’s Erie-area fishing report from Randy Leighton, deputy waterways conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission:
A winter blast hit the Erie area Monday leaving up to a foot and a half of wet snow. The area tribs had melted down, jamming the mouths with the large broken ice flows. Although there is some open water on the tribs, they have begun to quickly refreeze. The ice has been thick enough on Presque Isle Bay to withstand the spring temperatures late last week and was crowded with ice huts this past weekend. Ice thickness has been reported anywhere from 4 inches up to 10 inches depending on what part of the bay you are on. Catch reports at Presque Isle have been sporadic with mostly bluegills filling the buckets. There have been reports of good size perch catches and the occasional steelhead.
