Trout season is getting into full swing
With many NWPA waters receiving their second trout stockings already or in coming weeks, look for increasing catch rates. From the stocked trout lakes to the wild trout streams, there are plenty of fish in area waters already.
I spent an afternoon last weekend catching and releasing over four dozen trout from one of the area’s stocked trout lakes while fishing with a fellow angler. We lost about a dozen more fish before getting them up to the boat. Many times we were doubled up with fish on the end of our lines at the same time. It was a blast watching these fish flash at lures and follow them right up to the boat, sometimes striking at the last second. An occasional bald eagle or osprey could be seen flying above scanning the waters for a quick meal on a beautiful day. Water temperatures were in the lower 40’s according to the thermometer on the portable fish finder. All of the action came in the shallows, where fish seem to be more comfortable this time of year as they search for food.
Trout usually prefer water temperatures between 50-70 degrees. As area water temperatures increase into the 50’s and lower 60’s, so does a trout’s metabolism. This should be when anglers will find the ideal trout fishing conditions and trout will be most active.
I’ve found that on colder days trout fishing may pick up during warmer periods of the day and as usual in the early morning and late evening. Look for areas where trout are jumping and feeding on the surface.
Often times, aquatic insect hatches occur when optimal temperatures are sustained for longer periods of time. When this happens trout will ignore most other baits while gorging on these insects.
Anglers who fish from boats may have an advantage over shore anglers in maneuverability, but will often times be casting to the same areas as shore anglers this time of year. If you decide to fish from a boat remember the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) requires that: until April 30th boaters are required to wear a life jacket while underway or at anchor on a boat less than 16 feet in length or in any canoe or kayak. This requirement applies to all Pennsylvania waters.
Lake Pleasant is scheduled to receive it’s second regular season trout stocking today at 9:15 am. This stocked trout lake is a popular fishing destination in Erie County, and is stocked with rainbow trout.
