Trout Fishing on NWPA’s Larger Streams

Trout fishing is superb on the larger trout streams in NWPA. Tionesta Creek, Oil Creek, and Brokenstraw Creek have all received another stocking of adult trout. These streams have been experiencing some notable grannom caddis hatches and the fishing has been great! Trout have been striking both emergers and dry flies. Trout can also be caught with all of the usual baits and lures. Spinners, paste baits, and worms are also producing well for trout anglers.  Although some anglers have luck with these baits and lures, when the fish are finicky, nothing beats a well placed fly.

Tionesta Creek, Oil Creek, and Brokenstraw Creek all have excellent water quality. The clean cool water supports a variety of aquatic insects and baitfish, which provide food for trout. All three of these larger trout streams also contain scenic sections with deep holes. Fly fishing is a great way to fool the fish that have become accustomed to living in these waters.  Anglers can hook into some nice holdover trout that have grown quite a bit while residing in these streams.

The Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section of Oil Creek is a popular Spring fly fishing destination on one of NWPA’s larger trout streams. Here anglers may not harvest trout until June 15, so there are usually plenty of fish to be caught. The DHALO section of Oil Creek is located in Venango County, just south of Titusville, in Oil Creek State Park.
