Nicholas Colangelo, of Pittsburgh, is the musky man! He caught this 51″ monster muskellunge with a 25 ” girth recently while ice fishing in NWPA. His musky was caught using a tip up with a hand line. Nicholas used a live minnow to bait the enormous fish.

Nick said about the big catch, “The fight lasted only about 8 minutes. It was so hectic. With the temperature only 7° outside, and with the wind blowing across the ice, I had to be careful.”  Sub freezing temperatures are dangerous for fish being released. Temperatures below freezing can cause damage to the gills and eyes of fish. Nicholas kept the fish out of the water for less than 25 seconds before he guided it back through the 10 inch hole in the ice. “It all happened so fast but I was glad to see her kick away with a lot of strength.”

Nicholas has been fishing his whole life, but this is only his third year of ice fishing with his fishing partner Luke Wholey. Last year Nicholas pulled a potential state record musky through the ice. This fish stretched 53 inches in length and measured a whopping 29 inches around. The musky he caught last year was estimated to weigh over 50 pounds and was also released.

The Pennsylvania state record muskellunge has stood since 1924. The 54 pound 3 ounce fish was caught by Lewis Walker Jr., from Meadville, while fishing Conneaut Lake.
