Monarch Butterfly Tagging at Oil Creek State Park Sept.12
Learn about the miraculous life cycle and journey of the monarch butterfly during this educational program at Oil Creek State Park. Participants will also join DCNR staff in the tagging of adult monarchs before the butterflies begin their long trip to southern wintering locations. Some monarch butterflies will journey as far as Mexico during the annual late summer/autumn migration .
The journey thousands of miles south is as miraculous as the trip back north. It takes several generations of monarchs to complete the epic migration. Monarch butterflies are believed to pass the directions of their migrations genetically to their offspring. Scientists have begun to unravel the mysteries of this phenomenon through genome sequencing.
Monarch Butterfly Tagging at Oil Creek State Park is a great program with hands on activities sure to be fun for the whole family. Meet at the Oil Creek State Park Amphitheater Saturday, September 12, to participate in the program. The program is free and is scheduled from 2:00pm until 3:30pm.
