The Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes of 2014 has been announced and our regions’ waters are included. B.A.S.S. is a worldwide authority on bass fishing. Months of research and catch-rate data go into making this list of the nation’s most productive bass fishing waters. Bassmaster’s editor James Hall says, “The Bassmaster 100 Best Bass Lakes project spawned from our desire to not only identify traditionally good bass fisheries, but also to spotlight lakes that are red hot right now”. He adds, ” Our goal is to make the annual rankings as objective as possible by using the most current data available from state wildlife agencies, current tournament data, and expansive polling of the B.A.S.S. membership”.

Chautauqua Lake, a 13,00 acre body of water noted for it’s large musky fishery and just over the border in western New York, is listed at #86. Pymatuning Reservoir is another musky fishing magnet that boasts a good catch rate of largemouth and smallmouth bass, is listed at #71. Lake Erie makes the list at #56 and boasts the ability to produce enormous smallmouths. Presque Isle Bay itself is listed at #28. Bassmaster’s list recognizes these waters for their ability to produce average catches of 3 pound largemouths with an added killer spring run of smallmouths. It mentions the fact that these waters are one of the most overlooked, and that Presque Isle Bay is too good of a fishery to be ignored. Lake Erie’s waters near Buffalo rank near the top of this list at #3. The opportunity exists here for consistent 6 pound smallmouths, with average fish coming to the boat at 4 pounds. These waters are recognized as world class and definitely worth a look.

From April 12th until June 13th of this year, anglers may keep 1 bass of at least 20 inches in length from Lake Erie or the tributaries. After the June 13th bass season opener, anglers may catch and have in possession up to 4 bass at least 15 inches in length.
