Erie National Wildlife Refuge’s Tsuga Trail has new bridges to assist Hikers/Bird Watchers
The Eastern Hemlock is Pennsylvania’s State Tree. Its scientific name is Tsuga Canadensis. This is where the Tsuga Trail gets its name. There are many Eastern Hemlocks along the Tsuga Trail located within the 5,206 acre Sugar Lake Division of the Erie National Wildlife Refuge.
The Tsuga Trail has a 1.2 mile short loop and an additional .4 mile long loop that has some more challenging terrain. It is a perfect trail to stroll with the kids while enjoy a refreshing walk in the woods. The trail passes through meadows and thick forested areas where many species of plants and animals can be found.
There are two new bridges located on the Erie National Wildlife Refuge’s Tsuga Trail. These bridges were completed in July by the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) . These bridges allow hikers to pass through the trail more easily. One of these new bridges is located across a beaver pond and is a perfect place for viewing wildlife/bird watching.
Over 237 species of birds have been documented within the refuge. More than 40 species are commonly seen during the fall season. A bird watcher’s checklist is available at several information centers throughout the refuge. The list follows the Fortieth Supplement to the American Ornithologists’ Union Checklist of North American Birds. It also lists the frequency you can expect to see various species based on the seasons.
The Tsuga Trail is located at the Erie National Wildlife Headquarters where you will find a visitor center and restroom facilities. For more information on the Erie National Wildlife Refuge including maps of trails found at the refuge go to http://www.fws.gov/refuge/erie/ or call (814)-789- 3585.
