Don’t take safety on ice for granted
The warming temperature today and another expected thaw Saturday have the U.S. Coast Guard at Erie carefully watching the Presque Isle Bay ice.
From today’s Erie Times-News:
The U.S. Coast Guard will keep an eye on Presque Isle Bay this weekend as ice that only recently started forming could quickly become unstable because of mild temperatures and rain.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland is calling for temperatures approaching 50 degrees for today and Saturday, with chances of rain on both days.
The brief period of warmer weather comes as Presque Isle Bay has areas that aren’t yet frozen over, officials from the Coast Guard station in Erie said Thursday. Most ice fishing is being done on the western part of the bay, but that ice could start to weaken in coming days because of the weather, they said.
The Coast Guard will monitor the ice and put out warnings if conditions become dangerous. Officials ask that people be cautious when venturing onto the ice.
The best advice from this desk is not to go onto the ice at all. If you must, step carefully and pay attention to your spider sense.
