Canadohta Lake ice fishing

Canadohta Lake is turning out every variety of fish to ice anglers.
Jerry Van Tassel at Van Tassel’s Timberland Bait, 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City, says the fishing is much like deer hunting — one has to know where to go. Those that do are yanking northern pike, muskie, perch crappie and walleye through the ice. Times-News outdoors writer Mike Bleech once included Canadohta Lake in his list of northwestern Pennsylvania’s top muskie waters.
Spend a weekend day scouting to prepare for Van Tassel’s second annual ice fishing contest Feb. 14-15. Fishing will start at 8 a.m. Valentine’s Day and run through 5 p.m. Feb. 15.
Entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Half of all entry fees will be returned in prize money (Van Tassel awarded $875 to the 147-angler field in 2008); child entries will be returned 100 percent.
Daily weigh-in is at the boat launch. First-come first-served free lunch of sloppy Joe’s, hot dogs, hot coffee and hot chocolate starts at noon each day.
There will be classes for muskie, northern pike, walleye, bass, perch and crappie. Longest fish wins; heaviest fish is the tiebreaker.
Enter at the bait store or these Union City businesses; Frog Pond Restaurant, 35765 Circuit Drive; Lincan Food Mart, 35733 Danner Drive; and Sues Mill, 35771 Danner Drive.
