Vintage DIY Wedding in Cobourg, Ontario
K. Thompson Photography shares with us a lovely wedding that’s rustic/vintage inspired that’s just filled with DIY details. Held in Cobourg, Ontario, Kerry & Brett’s wedding carried thoroughout their own monogram and natural details such as tree seedlings for as their seating cards/favours.
When we were both ready, we met for a first look. I’m so glad that we opted to do it. It gave us a moment on our own to soak everything up, and was also the perfect opportunity for both of us to see our wedding bands for the first time.
Says the bride: Since our theme was vintage, we went with it wherever we could. The necklace that I wore belonged to my Maternal Grandmother. She passed away about 6 months before I was born, and my Mom gifted it to me in the week leading up to the wedding. The brooch in my hair was also a family piece, and had belonged to my husband’s paternal Grandmother whom I never had the chance to meet. I was honoured to wear it. Since we were trying to do our wedding on a budget, one of the areas I chose to save on was flowers. I made my bouquet myself from a Jane Austen collection, and the girls bouquets were made from dyed coffee filters. Do I regret not getting real flowers? Not for one second. I loved the personal touch of my handmade flowers, and received so many compliments on my bouquet! Some of my favourite photos to look at from that day are from a moment I wasn’t able to experience firsthand. They are the photos of our daughter bringing my gift to my husband. We met online in 2007, and after the first weekend we spent together in person I sat down and wrote a letter sharing my feelings and saying I was certain we were going to marry. Over the course of the next 6 years I continued to write letters, documenting the ups and downs of our relationship and kept them tucked away. On the morning of our wedding, I had our 2 year old daughter deliver these letters to him in a box, with a note explaining what they were.
Our bands have each other’s finger prints wrapped around the outside, with a personal message engraved inside. I absolutely adore them! We DIY’d as much as we could, including all of the stationery for the wedding. I did a lot of searching online until I found the wording that I liked, and then I worked with my Mom (a graphic designer) to create my perfect invites, along with a monogram that we carried throughout the wedding details.
The table number stands my Father made for us using wood and dowels. I painted the chalkboards myself and then painted a gold frame around them using a gold paint pen. All of the burlap tablecloths were sewn by my patient mother, while my mother-in-law Mom collected all of the vintage lace table cloths for us. She did a great job and got us a ton on the cheap! For favours, my husband really wanted to offer trees to our guests that they could take home and plant. We ordered one tree per couple plus a few extras. We also offered some cookie favours that my incredible Matron of Honour made for us. Our card box was another really personal touch. The suitcase is a vintage Samsonite that belong to my husband’s maternal grandmother. She let us have it, and even sent along vintage travel brochures for Niagara Falls, Toronto and New York City – all significant cities to us!
Our Guestbook I also made. I had seen some selling on Etsy for a lot of money, so decided to try my hand at it myself. It turned out better than I can imagine and I am so happy to have it hang in our home! I also made the bar sign using wood my father had and some chalkboard paint. I handlettered everything myself and used light coats of a matter clear coat to seal everything from wiping off.
