Dave Lefebre on playoff beards and Facebook
More from a Q&A in today’s Erie Times-News with Union City bass pro Dave Lefebre as he heads into the FLW Tour opening event on Lake Okeechobee :
On using Facebook and Twitter
“It’s been valuable, and the sponsors are realizing it, too. If you were going to pay somebody to represent the Erie Times-News, there’s ways to figure out how much something is worth that are proven. Really, Facebook and other kinds of things aren’t proven.”
“It keeps you busy in the off time. I just kind of try to keep up with it.”
“For this tournament, Clewiston, I get like 10 or more different people that fish this lake that want to help (by providing information about where and how to fish). Some of those (tour) guys are getting a lot of help off Facebook because people are nice and want to help. That’s one of the things I’m just totally against. I just say, that’s not how I operate. The best way to help me is to not help anyone else.”
On the Pittsburgh Steelers, his favorite team:
“I was thinking about growing my beard out and wearing it like (Steelers) Brett Kiesel and Ben Roethsliberger. I was starting to, and realized how much gray I have.”
On re-signing for one year with motor sponsor Yamaha, which dropped its sponsorship this year of the FLW Tour and its anglers:
“It’s been 10 years with Yamaha. I don’t really know the behind-the-scenes stuff that went on the last year. I ended up staying with the brand. I just couldn’t see throwing 10 years away just yet.”
On how far he travels by water during a tournament:
“The most would be 300, 250 miles in a day in a couple different places like Kentucky Lake, Champlain. A normal tournament would probably be between 60 and 80 miles a day.”
“I like to get away from everybody. I remember back when I was a rookie, when I didn’t have any money. It’s a gamble when you’re going to run 70 miles one way; you’re burning a lot of money. Half the field was where I was when I started and scared to run that far, just because they run out of money. A lot of guys like to stay close just in case the weather’s bad. If you go as far away as you can from the tournament ramp, you’re going to get rid of 70, 75 percent of guys.
