The Colour of Gozo in Photos

Blue. Azure. Azul. Blu.

Save for the flashes of lightning that arrived on the island as we did, the most piercing colour on the next day and all the days after that was blue.

Blue skies, blue sea, blue balconies, blue lagoon.

Seamless, dreamless flashes of blue, all set on a backdrop of honeycomb rock, dry earth and dusty walkways.

The rains came late this year, I’m told. They came when we did, wild and reckless, roaring with thunder, pounding on shutters, halting ferries and pretty much pausing life on the island as they knew it.

And then, just like that, they were gone.

Next week, this world will be green, I’m told. Prickly pears, palms and almonds, sloping hills and cut terraces blooming in bashful green.

But for now, Gozo remains an island of honey and ochre, covering itself in jewels of azure and deep sea blue.
