Presque Isle wildlife watch

Snow leading into the weekend did little to put down the wildlife at Presque Isle State Park.

On Friday, two truly big wild turkeys pranced on one of the paved roads.

At dusk Saturday, four deer fed and frolicked on the ice at Duck Pond.

The same night, on the drive out of the park, a slight red fox emerged from brush and ran ahead of the vehicle for a few paces before diving back into cover.

One regrettable sighting: The roadside tree near Gas Well Trail that for years has been home to a great horned owl family each spring toppled at some point this fall. It was not the only great horned owl nest in the park, but it was the only predictable and easily viewed nesting site. Even those who would not qualify themselves as birders would rubberneck on the drive past the tree.

Coupled with the absence of nesting bald eagles the past two years, and the subsequent wasting away of the eagle nest on Long Pond, spring birdwatching just won’t be the same.
